Sound That Surrounds You

Great sound transforms how you experience films, music and games. A properly designed surround sound system places you inside the action, not merely in front of it. At Vertex AV, our surround sound installations deliver cinema-quality audio with precise speaker placement, professional calibration and acoustic treatment that brings content to life in a way no soundbar or television speakers ever could.

The difference between a good surround system and a great one lies in the details. Speaker placement must follow geometric rules derived from cinema standards, adapted for your room's specific dimensions. Subwoofer location requires room mode analysis to avoid boomy or weak bass. Acoustic treatment tames reflections that muddy dialogue and blur stereo imaging. And calibration with professional measurement tools ensures the frequency response is flat, the levels are balanced and the delays are precise. We handle every one of these details with the same meticulousness we apply to our most elaborate home cinema projects.

Dolby Atmos has revolutionised home audio by adding height information to traditional surround formats. Where 5.1 and 7.1 systems create a horizontal soundfield around the listener, Atmos adds ceiling speakers or upward-firing modules that create a true three-dimensional dome of sound. Rain falls from above, helicopters fly overhead, and atmospheric effects envelop you from every direction including vertically. We install Atmos systems in configurations from 5.1.2 for compact rooms to 9.1.6 for dedicated cinemas, always selecting the channel count that matches your room size and listening habits.

Speaker selection is tailored to your room and aesthetic preferences. For clients who want invisible audio, we specify in-wall and in-ceiling models from KEF, Sonance, Artcoustic and Wisdom Audio that mount flush with the surface and can be painted to match your decor. These speakers use advanced driver technology and sealed enclosures to deliver performance that rivals freestanding hi-fi speakers. For clients who prefer visible speakers as design elements, we offer statement pieces from Artcoustic and Wisdom Audio that look as striking as they sound. Every speaker we specify is chosen for its sonic accuracy first, with form factor considered second.

Subwoofer design is often the most technically complex aspect of a surround system. A single subwoofer in the wrong location can produce boomy, one-note bass that overwhelms the room. We approach subwoofer placement scientifically, using room mode calculators and the subwoofer crawl technique to identify optimal positions. For larger rooms, we deploy multiple subwoofers in strategic locations that cancel standing waves and deliver consistent bass response across every seat. We specify subwoofers from SVS, JL Audio and REL that range from compact sealed units for small rooms to massive ported designs for dedicated cinemas. Every subwoofer is calibrated to integrate seamlessly with the main speakers, neither overwhelming nor disappearing.

Acoustic treatment completes the system. Even the finest speakers perform poorly in an untreated room with hard surfaces. We design absorption panels for first-reflection points, diffusion panels for the rear wall to maintain spaciousness, and bass traps for corners and ceiling junctions where low-frequency energy accumulates. In London properties with party walls, we add mass-loaded vinyl barriers and resilient channel construction to prevent sound transmission. Our acoustic designs are based on ray-tracing analysis and modal calculations, not guesswork, ensuring the treatment addresses your room's specific acoustic challenges.

Calibration is the final step that transforms good hardware into a great system. Using professional measurement microphones and room correction software such as Dirac Live or Trinnov, we measure the frequency response, delay and level of every speaker at the listening position. Digital filters then correct room-induced colourations, delivering a neutral, balanced sound where dialogue is crystal clear, effects are impactful and music sounds natural. We also perform manual listening tests with familiar content to ensure the automated calibration matches real-world performance. The result is a surround sound system that performs to professional standards in your specific room.

Audio FAQs

What is Dolby Atmos and do I need it?

Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio format that adds height information to traditional surround sound, creating a true 3D audio experience. Sound can now come from above you: rain falling, helicopters passing overhead, or ambience enveloping you from all directions. Atmos requires ceiling speakers or upward-firing modules that bounce sound off the ceiling. While not essential for enjoyable surround sound, Atmos adds a level of immersion that makes films, games and music feel remarkably realistic. We recommend Atmos for dedicated cinemas and high-end media rooms, and we can configure 5.1.2, 7.1.4 or even 9.1.6 systems depending on room size and budget.

How many speakers do I need for surround sound?

The optimal speaker count depends on room size and usage. A 5.1 system (five speakers plus subwoofer) is the minimum for proper surround sound and works well in rooms up to 4 metres by 5 metres. A 7.1 system adds rear surrounds for larger rooms or multiple rows of seating. Dolby Atmos configurations such as 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 add ceiling speakers for height effects. For very large dedicated cinemas, we may specify 9.1.6 or even 11.1.8 arrays. During your consultation, we assess your room and listening habits to recommend the configuration that delivers the best experience without unnecessary expense.

Can surround sound speakers be hidden in walls?

Yes, and this is our preferred approach for most installations. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers from KEF, Sonance, Artcoustic and Wisdom Audio deliver exceptional performance while remaining virtually invisible. The speakers mount flush with the wall surface and can be painted to match your decor. For locations where in-wall installation is impossible, such as solid brick walls in period properties, we offer on-wall slimline speakers that are only 8 to 10 centimetres deep and can be colour-matched to your interior. We never compromise audio quality for aesthetics: every speaker we specify is chosen for its sonic performance first, with form factor considered second.

Where should the subwoofer be placed?

Subwoofer placement is critical for smooth, powerful bass. In most rooms, the optimal location is determined through a process called the subwoofer crawl: we temporarily place the subwoofer at the primary listening position, play test tones, and crawl around the room perimeter to find where bass sounds most even. This location then becomes the permanent subwoofer position. For larger systems, we often use multiple subwoofers placed at different room locations to cancel out standing waves and deliver consistent bass across all seating positions. Our room correction calibration then fine-tunes each subwoofer for seamless integration with the main speakers.

Do you calibrate surround sound systems after installation?

Calibration is essential and included in every surround sound installation we complete. We use professional measurement microphones and room correction software such as Dirac Live, Trinnov or the built-in calibration systems in premium AV receivers. The process measures the frequency response, delay and level of every speaker at the listening position, then applies digital filters to correct room-induced colourations. The result is a balanced, neutral sound where dialogue is clear, effects are impactful and music sounds natural. We also perform manual listening tests to ensure the automated calibration matches our standards, and we provide you with before-and-after measurements so you can see the improvement.

Can I use my surround sound system for music?

Absolutely. A well-designed surround system is excellent for music playback, particularly multi-channel formats such as Dolby Atmos Music, DTS:X Music and Sony 360 Reality Audio. Streaming services including Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon Music offer thousands of tracks in these immersive formats. For stereo music, we configure your system to play through the front left and right speakers with the subwoofer, creating a full-range stereo presentation that surpasses most dedicated hi-fi systems. We can also add a separate two-channel music zone with dedicated amplifiers and speakers if you are a serious audiophile. The flexibility of modern surround processors makes them ideal for both film and music enjoyment.
