Media Room Installation
Casual entertainment for everyday living
Entertainment Spaces for Real Life
Not every home has space for a dedicated cinema, but every home deserves great entertainment. Our media room installations create versatile, family-friendly spaces where you can watch films, play games, stream music and relax together, all without sacrificing the room's everyday function as a living space. The key is designing systems that blend into your interior when not in use and deliver impressive performance when needed.
Media rooms are the most popular entertainment installation we complete. They suit modern family life: children can game on the console while parents stream a series on the same display, switching inputs with a single remote press. Friends can gather for a film night with surround sound that rivals commercial cinemas. And on quiet evenings, the room transforms into a music listening space with multi-room audio that extends throughout the house.
The display is the centrepiece of any media room. We specify 4K OLED and QLED TVs from leading manufacturers, sized precisely for your viewing distance. For rooms where wall mounting is impractical, we install motorised TV lifts on furniture units or ceiling drops that conceal the screen when not in use. In larger rooms, we may recommend ultra-short-throw laser projectors with ambient-light-rejecting screens that deliver 100-inch images even in partially lit spaces. Every display is calibrated for colour accuracy, and we configure HDR settings to match your room's lighting conditions.
Audio design for media rooms requires a different approach than dedicated cinemas. Rather than multiple speakers positioned for precise imaging, media rooms benefit from soundbars and simplified surround systems that deliver immersive audio without dominating the room visually. The Sonos Arc with Dolby Atmos creates convincing height and surround effects from a single bar beneath the TV. For clients wanting more, we install 5.1 systems with wireless rear speakers that eliminate cable runs, or in-wall speakers that disappear into the decor. All systems are calibrated for your room's acoustics using room correction software.
Gaming is increasingly central to media room design. We integrate consoles into unified control systems, optimise display settings for low input lag, and can add dedicated gaming monitors with high refresh rates for competitive players. For racing enthusiasts, we install simulator rigs with force-feedback steering wheels and surround audio. For VR users, we create safe play spaces with ceiling-mounted cable management systems. Gaming is not an afterthought in our designs: it is a primary use case that shapes equipment selection, control programming and room layout.
Smart control transforms a media room from a collection of remotes into a seamless experience. A single Control4 or Crestron remote can switch between TV, Blu-ray, games console and streaming apps, adjust volume, dim lights and lower blinds. Voice commands through Alexa or Google Home add hands-free convenience: "Alexa, movie night" can set the entire room to your preferred cinema configuration. And automated scenes ensure the room is always ready: the TV turns on to your favourite news channel in the morning, and the lights gradually dim when you start a film in the evening.
We pay particular attention to aesthetics in media room installations. Cables are hidden within walls, trunking or furniture. Equipment is concealed in ventilated cabinets or rack systems that match your decor. Speakers are either invisible in-wall models or design-conscious freestanding options that complement your interior. The result is a room that looks like a living space, not a technology showroom, yet performs like a professional entertainment suite when called upon. Our clients in Chelsea, St Albans and Weybridge consistently remark that their media room has become the most used space in the house.

Media Room FAQs
What is the difference between a media room and a home cinema?
A home cinema is a dedicated room designed exclusively for film and television viewing, typically featuring a projector, large screen, tiered seating, acoustic treatment and controlled lighting. A media room is a multi-purpose living space where entertainment coexists with daily life: a family room with a large TV, comfortable sofa and good sound that also functions for gaming, music streaming and casual socialising. Media rooms are more versatile, less expensive to create and better suited to homes where a dedicated cinema room is not practical. At Vertex AV, we design both, and many of our London clients choose media rooms for their main living spaces while adding a dedicated cinema elsewhere in the property.
What size TV should I choose for my media room?
TV size should be determined by viewing distance rather than room size alone. As a general rule, the screen width should occupy approximately 30 to 40 degrees of your field of view. For a 3-metre viewing distance, this means an 65 to 75-inch TV. For 4 metres, consider 75 to 85 inches. For larger rooms, 100-inch TVs or projection systems may be appropriate. We also consider room brightness: OLED and QLED TVs perform better in rooms with some ambient light, while projection requires better light control. During your consultation, we measure your seating position precisely and recommend the optimal display size and technology for your specific space.
Can a media room have surround sound?
Absolutely. While media rooms typically do not accommodate the elaborate speaker arrays of dedicated cinemas, excellent surround sound is entirely achievable. We regularly install 5.1 systems with a soundbar or centre speaker, front left and right speakers, rear surrounds and a subwoofer. For rooms where visible speakers are undesirable, in-wall and in-ceiling options from KEF, Sonance and Artcoustic deliver impressive performance while remaining invisible. Wireless rear speakers eliminate cable runs across the room. And advanced soundbars with Dolby Atmos, such as the Sonos Arc or Sennheiser Ambeo, create convincing height and surround effects from a single unit beneath the TV.
How do you hide cables in a media room?
Cable management is essential for a clean media room aesthetic. Our methods include chasing power and HDMI cables into walls with plaster making-good, installing cable trunking that matches your skirting boards, using wireless HDMI transmitters for sources that are not co-located with the TV, and mounting soundbars and games consoles on floating shelves with integrated cable routing. For properties where chasing is not permitted, such as listed buildings, we use slimline surface trunking in colours that blend with your decor, or we route cables behind furniture and under carpets using flat ribbon cables. Every installation is planned to ensure no visible cables spoil the room's appearance.
Can you integrate gaming consoles into the media room system?
Gaming is a core function of most media rooms we design. We integrate PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles into unified control systems that simplify source selection and optimise display settings. A Game mode on your Control4 or Crestron remote can switch the TV to low-latency game mode, activate the console, set the sound system to stereo for headphone compatibility and dim the lights slightly for immersion without eye strain. We also install dedicated gaming displays with high refresh rates for competitive players, and we can add racing simulator setups, VR stations and streaming equipment for content creators. Gaming is not an afterthought: it is a primary use case that shapes our design decisions.
How much does a media room installation cost?
Media room costs vary widely based on display size, audio complexity and control integration. A straightforward installation with a 65-inch TV, soundbar and clean cable management might cost £3,000 to £6,000. A more elaborate setup with an 85-inch OLED display, 5.1 in-wall speakers, motorised TV mount and Control4 integration typically ranges from £12,000 to £25,000. High-end media rooms with 100-inch displays, Dolby Atmos soundbars, automated lighting scenes and Crestron touchpanel control can reach £30,000 to £50,000. We provide itemised quotations that separate essential components from optional enhancements, allowing you to phase the investment.
Do you install media rooms outside London?
Yes, we install media rooms throughout the Home Counties and beyond. While London represents our largest market, we regularly work in Surrey, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. Large country properties often feature multiple media rooms: a family snug, a teenager's gaming den and a garden room entertainment space. We also install outdoor media systems with weatherproof TVs and speakers for terrace viewing. Travel beyond our core area is assessed on a project-by-project basis, and we have completed media room installations as far afield as the Cotswolds and the South Coast for clients who value our design expertise.
