Residential Fibre Optic & Structured Cabling
Discreet, high-bandwidth infrastructure for luxury living
Fibre Networks Designed Around Your Home
A luxury home deserves an infrastructure that is as refined as its interiors. Vertex AV designs and installs residential fibre optic networks that deliver uncompromising bandwidth to every room while remaining entirely invisible. Our installations are planned around your furniture layouts, artwork placements and architectural features, not imposed upon them.
In new build mansions around St Albans and Weybridge, we install a central OM4 fibre backbone during the construction phase, before walls are closed. This backbone connects the main equipment room to secondary distribution points on each floor, from which fibre drops extend to media rooms, home offices, master bedrooms and garden pavilions. The result is a property where 10Gb networking is available at every significant room, supporting everything from 8K video distribution to high-resolution CCTV backbones without a single visible cable.
For period properties in Chelsea, Kensington and Notting Hill, we take a different approach. These homes often have solid masonry walls, shallow floor voids and listed interiors that prohibit standard installation methods. We use micro-bore fibre and specialised routing techniques to run cables through existing service channels, behind cornices and within chimney breasts. Where floorboards must be lifted, we work with specialist restorers to ensure they are replaced without damage. Our engineers carry dust extraction equipment and protective sheeting, and we schedule works to minimise disruption to family life.
The performance benefits of fibre in a residential setting are substantial. A large home with multiple Control4 or Crestron processors, dozens of IP cameras, whole-home audio zones and several 4K sources places enormous demands on its network. Copper ethernet can struggle with distance, interference and bandwidth when pushed to these limits. Fibre eliminates these constraints, providing a dedicated high-bandwidth pathway for AV distribution, security and automation that operates independently of the family WiFi and internet connection.
We also install fibre for specific lifestyle applications. Home cinemas in the basement benefit from fibre HDMI or HDBaseT extensions that carry uncompressed 4K and 8K signals over 100 metres without degradation. Garden rooms and pool houses receive fibre links that support full smart home functionality as if they were part of the main building. Guest cottages on country estates in the Cotswolds and Oxfordshire are connected via armoured direct-burial fibre that withstands ground movement and weather exposure. Every installation is tested, certified and documented with the same rigour we apply to commercial projects, because your home deserves nothing less.
Structured Cabling That Lasts Decades
Structured cabling is the nervous system of your smart home. Alongside our fibre installations, we design and install premium copper cabling infrastructure using Cat6a and Cat7 cables with professional termination, testing and certification. This provides the backbone for data, AV, telephony and automation for decades to come. Every cable is labelled, tested with a Fluke DSX analyser, and certified to TIA and ISO standards.
We install Cat6a as our standard data cable, which supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet over 100 metres and provides ample bandwidth for current and future applications. For demanding applications such as 10G switching and PoE++ power delivery, we specify Cat7 with shielded pairs. For long runs and backbone connections, we install OM3 multimode or OS2 single-mode fibre optic cable. We also install RG6 coaxial for satellite and aerial distribution, and oxygen-free copper speaker cable in appropriate gauges for audio systems.
We recommend a minimum of two Cat6a data points per room, with four in living rooms, home offices and media rooms. This provides redundancy and flexibility for future device additions. In addition to data points, we install dedicated access point drops for WiFi, PoE drops for IP cameras and intercoms, and HDMI or HDBaseT runs for AV distribution. During the design phase, we map every device location and specify the exact cable types and quantities required.
For new builds and renovations in St Albans, Rickmansworth and Weybridge, we work alongside builders and architects to install cabling infrastructure before walls are closed. This first-fix approach ensures cables are routed cleanly through wall cavities and ceiling voids, with no surface runs or visible conduit. The result is a property that is future-proofed for technology upgrades for the next 20 to 30 years. We produce as-built drawings showing every cable route and termination point for future maintenance and upgrades.

Residential Fibre & Cabling FAQs
What fibre solutions do you offer for luxury homes?
We design bespoke fibre optic networks tailored to the architecture and lifestyle of each property. For new builds and major renovations, we install a central OM4 fibre backbone from the equipment room to distribution points on each floor, with fibre-to-the-room drops for media rooms, home offices and master suites. For retrofit projects in period townhouses, we use micro-duct and micro-bore fibre that can be routed through existing voids with minimal structural impact. We also install fibre for dedicated AV networks, security backbones and smart home control systems, keeping these operational networks separate from the family internet for reliability and security.
Can you install fibre in a listed or period property?
Yes, and we take particular care to preserve historic fabric. In Georgian and Victorian townhouses in Chelsea, Kensington and Notting Hill, we route fibre through existing service voids, chimney flues and floor cavities rather than creating new penetrations in original plaster or masonry. Where new routes are unavoidable, we use the smallest possible drill sizes and make good with lime plaster or matching materials. We have worked in numerous Grade II listed properties across London and the Home Counties, and we understand the sensitivity required when installing modern infrastructure in historic settings.
How does fibre improve smart home performance?
Copper ethernet has distance and bandwidth limitations that become significant in larger homes. Fibre eliminates these constraints, allowing 10Gb and 100Gb links between the equipment room and remote switch locations anywhere in the property. This means your Control4 or Crestron processors communicate without latency, 4K and 8K video streams from Kaleidescape or Apple TV distribute flawlessly, and IP cameras upload high-resolution footage without buffering. Fibre is also immune to electrical interference, which is particularly valuable in homes with complex electrical systems, underfloor heating and multiple sub-distribution boards.
Do you work with architects and interior designers?
Absolutely. We are regularly engaged by architects and interior designers during the design development stage to coordinate cable routes, equipment locations and access panels with the architectural intent. We provide detailed cable routing drawings that the architect can integrate into their construction documentation, and we attend design team meetings to resolve coordination issues before work starts on site. Our goal is to make the technology invisible: no surface trunking, no visible access panels, no cables on display. We have worked with leading London practices on projects in Mayfair, Belgravia, Hampstead and the Cotswolds.
What areas do you cover for residential fibre?
We install residential fibre throughout central and greater London including Chelsea, Kensington, Mayfair, Notting Hill, Hampstead, Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Primrose Hill. In Hertfordshire we serve St Albans, Harpenden, Radlett and Rickmansworth. In Surrey we cover Weybridge, Cobham, Guildford and the Wentworth Estate. We also work extensively in the Cotswolds on country house projects, and in Oxfordshire around Henley-on-Thames and Chipping Norton. For larger estate projects we travel throughout the Home Counties and into Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.
How is residential fibre different from commercial fibre?
Residential fibre places greater emphasis on aesthetics, discretion and integration with interior design. Commercial installations prioritise density, standardisation and rapid moves and changes. In a home, we take time to conceal every cable route, select equipment locations that do not compromise room layouts, and use finishes that match the interior specification. We also design for the specific needs of residential technology: AV distribution, whole-home audio, security and access control, rather than generic office networking. The testing is equally rigorous, but the installation approach is tailored to the domestic environment and its occupants.
What testing and certification do you provide?
Every fibre strand we install is tested with a Fluke CertiFiber Pro or DSX-8000 with fibre modules to verify insertion loss, return loss and optical length. We test at both 850nm and 1300nm for multimode, and 1310nm and 1550nm for single-mode. Test results are printed and bound into the project handover pack, along with as-built drawings showing exact cable routes, panel layouts and core assignments. For warranty purposes, we retain test data for the duration of the warranty period. This documentation is essential for future maintenance, insurance claims and property resale.
What structured cabling do you install alongside fibre?
We install Cat6a as our standard data cable, supporting 10 Gigabit Ethernet over 100 metres with ample bandwidth for current and future applications. For demanding environments such as 10G switching and PoE++ power delivery, we specify Cat7 with shielded pairs. For long runs and backbone connections, we install OM3 multimode or OS2 single-mode fibre optic cable. We also install RG6 coaxial for satellite and aerial distribution, and oxygen-free copper speaker cable in appropriate gauges for audio systems. Every cable is tested with a Fluke DSX analyser and certified to TIA and ISO standards.
How many data points should a luxury home have?
We recommend a minimum of two Cat6a data points per room, with four in living rooms, home offices and media rooms. This provides redundancy and flexibility for future device additions. In addition to data points, we install dedicated access point drops for WiFi, PoE drops for IP cameras and intercoms, and HDMI or HDBaseT runs for AV distribution. During the design phase, we map every device location and specify the exact cable types and quantities required, then produce as-built drawings for future maintenance.
When is the best time to install structured cabling?
The ideal time is during construction or renovation, before walls are plastered and ceilings are finished. This allows cables to be routed through wall cavities, floor voids and ceiling spaces without any visible surface runs. For existing properties, we use specialist tools to fish cables through existing voids and minimise surface runs with careful planning. We always prefer to install cabling during building work, and we work closely with builders and architects to coordinate cable routes with other trades. First-fix cabling ensures a property is future-proofed for 20 to 30 years.
Can you install cabling in a listed building?
Yes, though it requires careful planning and sensitive installation methods. In listed buildings, we avoid drilling through historic masonry where possible, using existing voids, conduits and service routes. Where new penetrations are necessary, we use the smallest possible drill sizes and make good with matching materials. We work with conservation officers when required and ensure all modifications are reversible. Our teams include specialists experienced in working with historic buildings across London, from Georgian townhouses in Chelsea to Victorian villas in Hampstead.
