The Art of Dimming

Dimming transforms a room from bright and functional to intimate and relaxing. Our dimmable lighting systems provide smooth, flicker-free control across all lamp types: from warm-dimming LEDs that get warmer as they dim to tunable white that shifts from energising cool to relaxing warm. We specify and install the correct dimmer type for your specific lamps, ensuring compatibility and longevity.

Smart dimming adds scene control, scheduling, and remote access for complete lighting flexibility. A single keypad press can set your entire living room to a perfect dinner ambience. A scheduled scene can gradually brighten your bedroom at 7am. And a Goodnight button can dim every light in the house to zero from your bedside.

For properties in Chelsea, Kensington, and Mayfair where interior design is paramount, we specify dimmers that are invisible in the wall: Lutron Maestro and Caseta dimmers with clean, minimal faceplates that complement any decor. For period properties, we offer antique brass and bronze finishes. For contemporary interiors, glass and brushed metal options are available.

Dimming FAQs

Why does my LED light flicker when dimmed?

LED flickering when dimmed is almost always caused by an incompatible dimmer. Traditional leading-edge dimmers designed for halogen lamps do not work correctly with most LED drivers. The solution is to replace the dimmer with a trailing-edge or universal LED dimmer that is compatible with your specific LED lamps. We assess your existing lamps and specify the correct replacement dimmers, eliminating flickering and extending lamp life.

What is the difference between leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming?

Leading-edge dimmers cut the front of the AC waveform and were designed for resistive loads like halogen and incandescent bulbs. Trailing-edge dimmers cut the back of the waveform and are better suited to capacitive loads like LED drivers. Most modern LED lamps work best with trailing-edge dimmers, which produce less electrical noise, run cooler, and provide smoother dimming. Some premium LED lamps are compatible with both types. We specify the correct dimmer type for your specific installation.

Can I dim all types of LED lights?

Not all LEDs are dimmable. Dimmable LEDs are specifically designed with compatible drivers that accept variable power input. Non-dimmable LEDs will either not dim at all or may flicker and fail prematurely if connected to a dimmer. When specifying LED lamps, we always select dimmable versions and verify compatibility with the chosen dimmer. We also check minimum load requirements, as some dimmers require a minimum number of lamps to function correctly.

What is warm dimming?

Warm dimming is a feature of certain LED lamps that mimics the behaviour of halogen and incandescent bulbs: as the lamp dims, the colour temperature shifts from cool white to warm amber. At 100%, a warm-dim LED might be 2700K. At 10%, it shifts to 1800K, creating a candlelight-like warmth. This behaviour is psychologically comforting and creates beautiful atmosphere in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. We specify warm-dim LEDs for spaces where intimate, relaxing lighting is desired.

What is tunable white lighting?

Tunable white lighting allows you to adjust the colour temperature of your lights from cool white to warm white, or anywhere in between. This is achieved using LEDs with separate warm and cool white chips that blend to produce the desired temperature. Tunable white is ideal for circadian lighting schemes that shift from energising cool light in the morning to relaxing warm light in the evening. It is also useful in spaces used for different activities, such as a kitchen that needs bright cool light for cooking and warm light for dining.

How many lights can one dimmer control?

Dimmer capacity depends on the dimmer model and the wattage of connected lamps. A standard residential dimmer typically handles 250W to 400W of LED load, equivalent to 25 to 40 LED downlights at 10W each. For larger circuits, we use higher-capacity dimmers or split circuits across multiple dimmers. We calculate load requirements during the design phase to ensure every dimmer operates within its rated capacity, which is essential for longevity and performance.

Which areas do you cover for dimmable lighting installation?

We install dimmable lighting systems throughout London and the Home Counties. In London we cover Chelsea, Kensington, Mayfair, Notting Hill, Hampstead, Belgravia, and Knightsbridge. In Hertfordshire we serve St Albans, Watford, and Rickmansworth. In Surrey we cover Guildford, Weybridge, and Cobham. We also travel to Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire.
